Welcome to the Mansfield
Middle School German Homepage!
The German program at MMS begins in grade 6 where students take an exploratory "tour" of all of the languages offered here. The vocabulary taught is coordinated with Latin, French and Spanish in order to give students a basis for comparing and contrasting the 4 languages. In the 9 weeks of German students are introduced to basic vocabulary, grammar structures, geography of German-speaking countries, cultural topics (holidays, foods, etc) and basic conversational phrases. The grade 6 program is oral based and students are graded on class participation ( S+, S, S- ). At the end of the 6th grade students choose one of the 4 languages offered to study in grades 7 and 8. This 2-year program is equivalent to the Level I class offered at E.O.Smith High School. Students in grades 7 and 8 use the text book Deutsch Aktuell and have regular homework, quizzes and tests. Students in grades 7 and 8 are graded on the traditional A-U grade scale, and this is considered an academic class. German classes in grades 6-8 meet 3 times per week for 45 minutes. The homework policy, an online workbook, as well as daily assignments are posted on the German homework page which is updated weekly. Grades are posted on PowerSchool which is also updated on a weekly basis. Students who need extra help or enrichment can come for X Block or after school.
