Pursuant to Statutory provisions, the State Department of Environmental Protection has designated two Aquifer Protection Areas in Mansfield and Mansfield’s Planning and Zoning Commission has been designated as the Town’s Aquifer Protection Agency. Aquifers subject to State requirements are those used by water systems serving over 1,000 people. Currently, two areas in Mansfield have been designated by the State as Aquifer Protection Areas. These areas are situated adjacent to the University of Connecticut’s Fenton River and Willimantic River wellfields. These areas are depicted on Mansfield’s Zoning Map
Within the State designated Aquifer Protection Areas, all State land uses are under the regulatory jurisdiction of the State Department of Environmental Protection. Mansfield’s Aquifer Protection Agency has adopted Mansfield Aquifer Regulations
to address land uses on all other properties in the designated aquifer areas. Most single family uses are exempt from all aquifer permit requirements. Most commercial or industrial land uses are prohibited or strictly regulated in designated aquifer areas.
Mansfield’s Planning Office (429-3330) should be contacted if there are any questions regarding planned land uses within Mansfield’s designated Aquifer Protection Areas.
