Roadside Litter

Residents are encouraged to keep a section of their road free of litter. The Mansfield Public Works Department can be of assistance. Litter taken to the transfer station is not subject to trash fees. Let the attendant at the transfer station know that you are bringing in litter and you will not be charged for it. If you are signed up for trash collection service, place bags of litter next to your household trash. Write “litter” on any bags that put you over your service level. We ask that you recycle cans and bottles litter. For large volumes of litter, you may contact the public works department at 860-429-3333 to arrange a public works crew to make a pick-up.

Rid Litter Day

Every spring the Town promotes a Rid Litter Day. It is usually scheduled the Saturday after UConn’s spring weekend. Residents are encouraged to spend an hour or more that day to clean up roadside litter. This year's Rid Litter Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, 2013. Not only is litter unsightly, plastic litter especially can be harmful to wildlife. Littered cans, glass and plastic bottles can be recycled and residents are encouraged to keep them in a separate bag from other roadside litter. Bags of litter may be placed out with household trash for those with collection service or taken to the Mansfield transfer station for no charge. The transfer station is located on Rte 89, one mile from the intersection of Routes 195 and 89 in Mansfield Center. The transfer station is open Tuesdays, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Thursdays, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm and Saturdays, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. For more information about Rid Litter Day or the Adopt-A-Road program, call the Public Works Office at 860-429-3333.

Adopt-A-Road

The Mansfield Adopt-A-Road program was started in the early 1980's by the Mansfield Conservation Commission to address the problem of roadside litter. Any company, organization, group or citizen in Mansfield can apply to adopt a section of road with the Town. The Adopt-A-Road commitment is to remove litter at least four times each year for two years.
