The Mansfield Downtown Partnership seeks to foster the continued development, management, and promotion of downtown Storrs – a vibrant and economically successful community in the heart of Mansfield. The Partnership will, where appropriate and upon request, assist in the future economic development of other areas within the Town of Mansfield deemed strategic by the Town of Mansfield, the University of Connecticut, and the Partnership Board of Directors.
The Partnership is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization created by the Town of Mansfield and the University of Connecticut in 2001. The Partnership is governed by a 19-member Board of Directors with a strong committee structure. The Partnership’s six committees – Advertising and Promotion, Business Development and Retention, Finance and Administration, Membership Development, Planning and Design, and Nominating – are one of the direct ways the public can participate in creating our new downtown in Mansfield.
The Partnership enjoys the support of over 250 members - individuals, businesses, and representatives from the Town and the University - of all ages and walks of life. Partnership members see the great possibilities that have begun with the first phases of a vibrant downtown with a mix of retail, restaurants, offices, and civic spaces. They recognize the financial benefit of an expanded tax base for Mansfield, which has historically relied heavily on state assistance. Partnership members appreciate the stronger sense of community that is developing from having a conveniently-located, pedestrian-oriented center with places for neighbors to meet, to share events and celebrations, and to work together. A Look Ahead
This is an exciting time for the Mansfield Downtown Partnership! The Partnership, the Town, the University, and master developer LeylandAlliance and their partner EDR were pleased to celebrate the ceremonial groundbreaking of Storrs Center on June 29, 2011 with many Partnership members, Mansfield residents, University community members, and local and state leaders.
On June 29, 2011, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership celebrated a ceremonial groundbreaking for Phases 1A and 1B of Storrs Center. The first buildings (1, 9, and 11 Dog Lane) were completed just over a year later, at which time the residential apartments, The Oaks on the Square, welcomed their first residents.
Since the first buildings opened in August 2012, Storrs Center has truly transformed the downtown area. Thirty-seven businesses have opened in Storrs Center (see the directory); of these, seven businesses relocated from buildings that were removed during construction. The Oaks on the Square, market-rate, residential apartments owned and managed by EdR, have been fully leased with each phase. The Oaks on the Square now consists of over 600 full-leased and occupied apartments in the Town Square neighborhood and along Wilbur Cross Way.
Construction continues on this multi-phased project, with construction of Phase 3 nearing completion in 2016. A residential neighborhood to the east of Wilbur Cross Way, The Main Street Homes at Storrs Center will feature forty-two townhomes and single-level flats at full completion. Residents have already begun enjoying their new homes in this vibrant, walkable downtown. As of September 2016, only five homes remain available for purchase. The process of creating a vibrant, successful downtown "from scratch" continues to be a complex undertaking, involving many municipal, state, and federal agencies; private and public partners; and residents. The Partnership looks forward to continuing this work and invites you to join in these efforts!
