Weather Schedule Changes

November 23, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As the winter weather approaches we are reminded that New England experiences all kinds of weather situations, some of which require that we alter our school or bus schedules. These decisions are made after consultation with our town Public Works staff and others. When making decisions to alter our schedule, consideration must be given to road conditions or other factors (such as weather related damage and power outages) throughout the community. There will be times when we will have to delay the opening of school, cancel classes, or dismiss students early. We understand that these decisions can cause inconvenience and create a challenge for families. Each decision is made for the safety of children. You are also encouraged to make your own assessment of weather and other conditions and keep your child home if you feel it might be too dangerous.

Decisions to alter the schedule are often made before 5:30 a.m. but changing weather conditions can cause us to make a call at any time. We use an automated calling system to alert you of these decisions. A recorded phone message is sent to your home and cell phones along with an e-mail message using the parent phone numbers on file with your child’s school. In addition, we can send a SMS text message to the cell phone contact on record in the school office. In order to receive the SMS text message, you need to “opt-in”. The process is simple and only takes a few seconds to complete. Simply send a text to 68453 from your cell phone(s) with the word “yes”. If you do not opt-in, you will not receive the SMS text message. We highly encourage you to complete this process.

When the school start time is delayed it will be delayed by 90 minutes. Arrive at bus stops 90 minutes later than your regular time and please remind your child to dress appropriately for the weather conditions as buses may be delayed due to poor conditions. Early closings will result in schools closing 2 hours and 45 minutes earlier than the regular dismissal time. Please be sure that you have made arrangements for your child if you are not home during the day. A schedule of delayed opening and early closing times has been included on the next page.

Sincerely,

Kelly M. Lyman
Superintendent of Schools
