Twelve years ago, in 2001, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership was formed to help facilitate the development of a true downtown for Storrs. Three years later in 2004, LeylandAlliance LLC of Tuxedo, New York was added to the team as master developer and later joined by co-developer EdR of Memphis, Tennessee. With the team in place, construction started in 2011 and the first tenants and residents of Storrs Center moved in just over a year later, in mid-2012. Now, as it begins its second year of operation, Storrs Center is well on its way to fulfilling its original vision of an authentic, walkable Main Street neighborhood where people can live, play, work, and learn. The first buildings of Storrs Center are completed and fully occupied, stores and restaurants are open, and every apartment home is leased. And this is just the beginning. Construction will continue until Storrs Center is fully developed, estimated to occur in 2016.

Community members, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership, Town of Mansfield, University of Connecticut leaders, Storrs Center developers LeylandAlliance and EdR, and officials from local and state government will gather to celebrate the grand opening of Storrs Center and the public/private partnership that is creating this highly visible town center. Secretary of State Denise Merrill, State Senator Donald E. Williams, Jr., State Representative Gregory Haddad, Town of Mansfield Mayor Elizabeth Paterson, University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst, and Mansfield Downtown Partnership Board President Philip Lodewick are scheduled to attend.

"The success of Storrs Center is a tremendous achievement on the part of the Mansfield Downtown Partnership, the Town of Mansfield, the University of Connecticut, dedicated public partners, and the many talented volunteers that have helped bring the vision of Storrs Center to life," said Howard Kaufman, Managing Member of LeylandAlliance LLC, master developer of Storrs Center. "We thank our development partners, trades, and the hundreds of workers who physically constructed the first phases of Storrs Center. Also, we are grateful for the leap of faith that our retail tenants displayed in opening their businesses in the midst of a construction zone. They could see the vision for Storrs Center.  Look at them now!"

"Storrs Center has been a true collaborative effort with wonderful results - an exciting town square with busy retail establishments and upscale housing adjacent to one of America's most prestigious universities," said Tom Trubiana, EdR's chief investment officer and executive vice president.  "This is a proud day for EdR and our partners as we celebrate this success and look forward to continued growth and success at Storrs Center."

The new apartments, shops, offices, and restaurants are located within easy walking distance of the University of Connecticut main campus, E. O. Smith High School, Mansfield Community Center, and Town Hall.

"We certainly have come a long way in fulfilling the vision of creating an environmentally sensitive sustainable downtown - knitting together quality architecture, pedestrian oriented streets, and open public spaces into a central town tapestry that allows our retail, restaurant, and commercial businesses to offer vital goods and services in a vibrant downtown center. I could not be more proud of the work that so many have contributed over the years to make this happen," said Philip Lodewick, President of the Mansfield Downtown Partnership.
