7/30/2016 - 09/10/2016: Community Puppet-Building Workshop

Community Puppet-Building Workshop

Presented by
Ballard Institute & Museum of Puppetry and the Mansfield Downtown Partnership

One of the most unique aspects of the Celebrate Mansfield Festival are the larger-than-life puppets that march down Storrs Road in the Celebrate Mansfield Parade!

Each year since 2009, the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry and the Mansfield Downtown Partnership, Inc. have hosted a Community Puppet-Building Workshop ahead of the Festival. Residents have the opportunity to learn how to design and construct giant puppets with the guidance of faculty and students from the UCONN Puppet Arts Program and from Sara Peattie of The Puppeteers Cooperative in Boston. Then, they march with the Ballard and their creations in the Parade!

In 2016, Sara Peattie will be guiding the creation of larger-than-life versions of characters from William Shakespeare's plays. The workshop will be held in conjunction with UConn's First Folio celebration.

Published in 1623, the First Folio is the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, and only 233 copies are known today. This year, to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Folger Shakespeare Library is sending a First Folio to every state in the United States, and UConn has been selected as the host site for Connecticut. Join us in September 1-25, 2016 in celebrating the greatest playwright of the English language with this exhibit from the world’s largest Shakespeare collection. For more information about the First Folio programs, please visit

The Community Puppet-Building Workshops will be held at the Ballard on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

No experience is necessary to participate in these free community puppet-building workshops with Sara Peattie. An adult must accompany children under the age of 15. To register for the workshop, contact the Ballard Institute via email or call 860.486.8580.

Parking is available in the the Storrs Center Garage and is free for the first two hours and $1 per hour thereafter, with a daily maximum charge of $8.

The Celebrate Mansfield Festival will be Sunday, Sept. 18 from noon to 4:00 PM on and around the Mansfield Town Square. For more information, please visit
