So Long Southeast

Southeast Elementary School in Mansfield, along with the Southeast School Parent-Teacher Organization, is organizing a final Open House and Ice Cream Social for its community on Saturday, June 11 from 2 to 5 PM, rain or shine.  Former and current students, staff, and all community members are invited to drop in anytime between 2 and 5 PM.

Staff members Betsy Parker, Erika LaBella, Andrea Lennon, Diane Peltier, and Susan Irvine have been mining former student files, sometimes even former school secretary’s rolodexes of contacts before computerized lists were the norm, to send invitations to families who have graced the halls of the elementary school since the mid-1980s.   The organizing group is also reaching out directly to every staff member who has worked at Southeast School.

Reuniting classmates and teachers is the focus of the celebration, and the Southeast School PTO will be serving ice cream in keeping with the Southeast School tradition.  There will be messaging boards for posting well wishes and memories for those attending, as well as those who cannot attend in person.

“Relationships are a key part of what has made Southeast School a great place to teach and learn,” says Southeast School Physical Education Teacher Betsy Parker.  “We want to provide that time and place for our community of students and staff members, present and past, to reminisce, reconnect with each other, and enjoy Southeast School for one final time.”

Southeast School Principal Lauren Rodriguez is excited for the gathering, too. “We are thrilled to host one grand finale for this wonderful school and hope everyone in our community will make the effort to come.  If you ever went to school here or taught here, we can’t wait to welcome you back again,” she adds.

There is no reservation required to attend. Community members are encouraged to pass the word along to former classmates and families.  Staff suggests that friends carpool, or utilize parking at the Mansfield Public Library nearby.

Southeast School is scheduled to be demolished soon after the school year ends as the next phase of building the new consolidated Mansfield Elementary School at the site.
